- Wheat – 200 pounds per adult is a general guideline.
- Why should we store wheat? – Freshly ground whole wheat is on t of the most nutritious foods that can be eaten. It is an excellent source of dietary fiber. In addition, it is very inexpensive.
- Rice – 50 pounds of rice is a general guideline. There are different kinds of rice. Long grain white rice stores the best, however Brown Rice is a little healthier.
- Pasta – 25 pounds of pasta is a general guideline.
- Corn – Corn includes cornmeal and popcorn.
- Oats – The number of oatmeal needed per family depends on your usage. Do you use a lot of it by eating it for breakfast, cooking with it in meatloaf, etc. Or do you only use it occasionally in cookies. A single #10 can generally holds about 12 Cups of oats. You should determine your families needs and store accordingly.
Challenge
- Prepare a storage inventory for your food storage room. To evaluate the adequacy of your home storage program take a written inventory. Keep a sheet of paper and pencil near your storage area, perhaps stuck to the wall with a thumbtack and a hanging pencil on a string. Each time that an item is removed or added it should be recorded. When the sheet is filled it can be used as a shopping list to replenish the supply or to bring the inventory up to date. Also it can help you see how much of a certain item that you use so that you can better plan for your families needs.
